Ironwork to new altar at St.Peter's, Berkhamsted. New work in puddled wrought iron
A new altar, designed by Percy Mark in Oak, was to incorporate an old slate altar slab as a secondary altar. The task was to support this stone slab using contemporary metalwork forged and finished in the traditional way. Puddled iron was chosen because a wax finish was to be used in the slightly humid atmosphere of the church.
The iron elements which support the slab are forged into a heavy, tapered moulded section to create interest and reduce weight. The jointing of the iron members is of particular note.
Candle scounces in iron surmount the main altar and a large lighting fitting, also in puddled iron, hangs above.
