Historic or ornamental ironwork is a specialist field but few of the metalworking craftsmen of today are conversant with traditional techniques, often regarded as the domain of the blacksmith and ironwork founder. The techniques once taken for granted in the creation of even workaday objects, and now all but forgotten, are the secret behind the vibrancy of much of the older work. Of course, it is important to have a grasp of these things to properly appreciate appropriate treatments in conservation work, but there are lessons to be learned for today’s designers in the application of the ancient wisdoms to new and even modern work.
