1970-72 Employed by British Waterways Board as maintenance engineer, working on eighteenth and nineteenth century structures, including canals and reservoirs.
1972-74 Working freelance, with friends, as a contractor to industrial museums. Specialists in steam shovels.
1974 – 1982 Director, Dorothea Restorations Engineers Diversified into architectural metalwork refurbishment and architectural cast ironwork.
