Bespoke Ironwork Gallery > Redcar Railings

A competition was held among artist blacksmiths to find a lively railing design to brighten up the north end of the promenade at Redcar. Chris Topp & Co. won with the concept of a series of seaside postcards.

The job was subsequently extended to two hundred and fifty yards of railing with twenty three postcard panels based on various themes suggested by the client. Each panel contains letters which when taken in order form a riddle with a hidden clue.

The panels were made from puddled wrought iron using all traditional techniques, approximately five tons of iron was used.
Four artists were commissioned to do the design; Stephen Abbey,
Humphrey Holland, Richard Albanese and Pete Douglas.

Start date - January 1994 Completion - June 1995
