Wartime Salvage Railings Replacement
With the current interest in the improvement of domestic properties, there is an emerging interest in the replacement of railings which may have been an original feature, but which were removed during the war for scrap.
Ironwork was often regarded as an integral part of the design of historic housing, and the attention to architectural detail, which we now find so appealing, was not diminished in the design of the iron railings and gates. Frequently their modern replacements are inappropriate in style, proportion workmanship and materials, and are often an intrusion of work of low quality into an otherwise high quality historic environment.
As regards appropriate design, while there may be little remaining evidence for what was there, the little evidence that does remain can be significant in enabling original design or type of railing to be determined. First then may we offer to survey and report on each case with reference to archaeological evidence and historical precedent.
We would like the opportunity to work with you to implement best policy for sympathetic renewal of railings and gates and would appreciate the chance to meet with you to discuss what we have to offer.
