Lanterns

Two memorial lanterns presented to the cathedral in 1927 were, oddly enough in a poorer condition than some of the previously unrestored eighteenth century ironwork.


In particular, some of the ornaments on the lanterns themselves were in very poor order. These were replaced with newly forged replicas, in puddled iron made by Matthew Dwyer, workshop foreman.

The lanterns , which look as though they should have been cast, were in fact exquisitely made by rivetting up curved pieces of angle iron. The standards, although having suffered some loss of leafwork, were only stabilised on this occasion, owing to the expense of a full restoration
